Steamboat Springs High School Students Launch "Study Friends" Club to Support Emerging Bilingual Learners/ Alumnos de Secundaria de Steamboat Springs Lanzan un Club de "Amigos del Estudio" para Apoyar a los Nuevos Estudiantes Bilingües

Last year, Lyla Baker, then a Steamboat Springs High School sophomore, signed up to tutor an elementary emerging bilingual student through the Study Friends program with Integrated Community. The program pairs a high school student or adult with an elementary-aged student to help them with English and academics (reading, writing, mathematics).

When Lyla started working with him, he was shy and reserved. They specifically focused on his reading and helping him with this homework. As the months progressed, the student came out of his shell, thanks partly to the tutoring, which helped to increase his confidence. Lyla saw a general love of learning emerge. 

Inspired by her work with this student, Lyla is setting out to grow awareness behind the program and recruit more students to help with tutoring. 

“It makes kids more comfortable to be in a room with another kid,” Lyla said. 

Now a junior, Lyla is spearheading the formation of a new club at the high school with the same name as the program at Integrated Community, Study Friends. She believes a large population of emerging bilingual students could benefit from free tutoring, and these students face a learning gap that needs to be filled. Additionally, peer-to-peer tutoring can significantly impact students’ learning, mainly because this method can be less intimidating than student-to-adult tutoring. The program also promotes a spirit of inclusion in our community and schools. 

The Study Friends Club at SSHS recruits potential tutors, while Integrated Community identifies students who need tutoring. Interested tutors fill out a volunteer form on the Integrated Community website, and the organization matches them with students based on availability. All tutoring sessions occur at Integrated Community, and tutors are only required to commit to one hour per week.

Lyla has contacted school building administrators about the club to get support in identifying students who could benefit from the extra tutoring. She said the district’s building administration has supported her club and connected her with emerging bilingual teachers. 

At future Study Friends club meetings, Lyla hopes to provide resources to the tutors to help them feel more comfortable tutoring students.

According to Janette Najera, Education Coordinator at Integrated Community, the club that Lyla is starting is a branch of what Integrated Community is already doing. Still, Lyla wants to bring more resources to the program through the student community. The program is meant to help students with academics or English language learners. Integrated Community has seen several new arrivals that could benefit from the extra tutoring and use more support for elementary and middle school students.cl

Najera said that if the club gains traction, they could further integrate the tutoring into other education programs at Integrated Community. Listo Para Kinder (Ready for Kindergarten) is a three-week class for English language learning students who haven’t attended preschool. It’s an opportunity for the children and their families to have an introduction to the schools and their systems. Listo Para Kinder would be another program that could benefit from the Study Friends tutors at SSHS.

Study Friends at SSHS hosted their first meeting in September. Stella Crofts, a junior and co-founder of the club, participates because it is an excellent way to get involved and make a change in our community. She enjoys the opportunity to change someone’s life because education is a big part of life and getting a job. 

“I’ve found one of the best ways to learn is to teach,” Stella said. 

Palmer Thompson-LeMay, a senior, is the vice president of Study Friends. He hopes to improve these kids' lives and fluency. 

“We have a lot of interest so far, and things are looking optimistic,” Lyla said.

El año pasado, Lyla Baker, que por aquel entonces era una estudiante de segundo año “sophomore” de Steamboat Springs High School, se inscribió como tutora de un estudiante bilingüe emergente de primaria a través del programa Study Friends con Integrated Community. El programa empareja un estudiante de secundaria o adulto con un estudiante de primaria para ayudarles con Inglés y en el área académica (lectura, escritura, matemáticas).

Cuando Lyla empezó a trabajar con él, era tímido y reservado. Se concentraron específicamente en su lectura y en ayudarle con las tareas. Con el paso de los meses, el alumno salió de su caparazón, gracias en parte a la tutoría, que le ayudaron a aumentar su confianza. Lyla vio surgir un amor general por el aprendizaje emergente. 

Inspirada por su trabajo con este estudiante, Lyla se ha propuesto dar a conocer el programa y convocar a más estudiantes para que ayuden en las clases particulares. 

"Hace que los niños se sientan más cómodos en un aula con otro niño", afirma Lyla. 

Ahora Junior cursa el penúltimo año ("junio"), Lyla encabeza la formación de un nuevo club en la escuela preparatoria con el mismo nombre que el programa de la Comunidad Integrada, Amigos del Estudio. Ella cree que una gran parte de los estudiantes bilingües emergentes podrían beneficiarse de las tutorías gratuitas, y que estos estudiantes se enfrentan a una brecha de aprendizaje que es necesario cubrir. Además, la tutoría entre compañeros puede tener un impacto significativo en el aprendizaje de los estudiantes, principalmente porque este método puede ser menos intimidante que la tutoría de estudiante a adulto. El programa también fomenta el espíritu de inclusión en nuestra comunidad y nuestras escuelas. 

El Club de Amigos del Estudio de la SSHS recluta a posibles tutores, mientras que la Comunidad Integrada identifica a los estudiantes que necesitan tutoría. Los tutores interesados rellenan un formulario de voluntariado en el sitio web de Integrated Community, y la organización los empareja con los estudiantes en función de su disponibilidad. Todas las sesiones de tutoría tienen lugar en la Comunidad Integrada, y los tutores sólo tienen que comprometerse a una hora por semana.

Lyla se ha puesto en contacto con los administradores de los edificios escolares para hablarles del club y obtener apoyo para identificar a los alumnos que podrían beneficiarse de las clases particulares adicionales. Dice que la administración del edificio del distrito ha apoyado a su club y la ha puesto en contacto con profesores bilingües emergentes.

Según Janette Najera, Coordinadora de Educación de Integrated Community, el club que Lyla está empezando es una rama de lo que Integrated Community ya está haciendo. Es una oportunidad para que los niños y sus familias tengan una introducción a las escuelas y sus sistemas. Listo Para Kinder sería otro programa que podría beneficiarse de los tutores de Study Friends en SSHS.

Study Friends at SSHS celebró su primera reunión en septiembre. Stella Crofts, estudiante de tercer año y cofundadora del club, participa porque es una excelente manera de involucrarse y hacer un cambio en nuestra comunidad. Ella disfruta de la oportunidad de cambiar la vida de alguien porque la educación es una gran parte de la vida y conseguir un trabajo. 

“Encuentro que una de las mejores formas de aprender es enseñar,” dijo Stella.
