Students and Families

Students are placed in situations that encourage observation, exploration, and personal reflection about the world in which they interact. Courses are designed to be immediately relevant to the students’ lives.

YVHS fosters a family-like atmosphere. We take time to get to know every student on a personal level. Our school culture emphasises community, communication, and a supportive learning environment.   

Our student-to-teacher ratio (7:1) and small class size (max 14 students) allows the YVHS faculty to provide more individualized education opportunities based on students’ needs and learning styles.

All classes at YVHS meet the State of Colorado educational standards. While emphasis is placed on broad exposure within subject areas throughout the student’s high school education, courses at YVHS are purposely designed to explore in-depth topics related to specific subject areas.

Personalized Learning Plans are developed for each student and are used to facilitate a clear pathway to graduation and post secondary aspirations.

Students receive credit at the end of each quarter and new classes start every eight weeks.

Classes are graded on a traditional grading scale and a numeric GPA is earned by all students.

YVHS does not assign homework. Time is provided during the school day to complete all assignments. Students may be required to attend study hall if time was not spent productively in class or if they need to make up work due to an absence.

Students may earn high school credit through the work study program if they have a job where they earn money.  Students can also earn high school credit through an internship with a community organization to support their career development.

Through the Edgenuity program, students may have the opportunity to take some or all of their classes online with YVHS teachers as they work toward YVHS graduation requirements.

Field trips can provide opportunities for students to learn outside of the traditional classroom, build leadership skills, expand personal experiences and facilitate a positive school culture and community. The ability to go on overnight field study trips will be determined each year.

Students may attend courses at Colorado Mountain College and earn high school and college credit.  Students must meet specific YVHS requirements before enrolling in a CMC course.

Friday afternoons are reserved for hikes throughout Routt County. These hikes are mandatory for all enrolled students and count as PE credit.

Students can take SSHS classes for graduation credit while enrolled at YVHS. Additionally, any YVHS student can participate in extracurricular activities offered at SSHS including athletics, theatrical productions, clubs and school sponsored dances and prom.
